We are delighted to announce that on December 5th the Buried Treasure label is releasing The Shout: original soundtrack, electronics & effects by Rupert Hine – on vinyl LP, CD and download.
The Shout is a 1978 British horror film directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, based on a short story by Robert Graves and starring Alan Bates, Susannah York and John Hurt. It was produced by Jeremy Thomas, who later won an Oscar with The Last Emperor.
Already renowned as an artist and producer at the forefront of experimental sound design, Rupert was approached to create the soundtrack: “I was quite an early user of technology that most people ran away from,” he would later say.
The music, themes and effects were created from scratch using a variety of electronic instruments, pieced together with hand-crafted overdubs, tape loops and other techniques. As well as aligning with the film’s key moments, the remit was to develop a sense of foreboding, building up to Alan Bates’ deadly, primeval shout.
Also included in this new release are cues from the cutting room floor, plus alternative stereo mixes from the original tapes. It’s s a testament to Rupert’s creativity that, with a fairly simple studio set up and basic set of instruments, he could conjure such inspired themes and effects.
Upon release, promotion for the score focused on two short themes created by Genesis’ Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford (for rights reasons these are not included), rather than Rupert’s extensive contributions (for which he earned only an “Electronics” credit) – a blot on the record which can now be put straight.
