Singer-songwriter and Broadway composer Duncan Sheik died on Thursday night, September 17, 2026, at age 56.
Duncan and Rupert were good friends, and Rupert had the privilege of producing Duncan’s breakthrough 1996 album and the wonderful track, “Barely Breathing.”
I had the pleasure of meeting Duncan a few times, however, I will always remember how super nice and kind he was and, after Rupert died, whenever I reached out with a question, a request, or needed some information about their time and work together, Duncan was willing to help and that kindness meant a great deal to me. He also recently contributed to Rupert’s forthcoming book and was most generous with his time to Jon Collins, curator, for which I am eternally grateful
It is terribly sad to lose such a gifted artist so young and my heartfelt condolences go to Duncan’s family, his friends, and all those who knew and loved him.
I would like to think that somewhere, somehow, Duncan and Rupert will make music together again.
Rest in peace, Duncan. You will be very much missed.
